RoRo facility

The RoRo facility in Passau-Schalding (at the 2233,450 km marks on the River Danube ) is functional in the shipping of road going units e.g. passenger vehicles, trucks, trailers etc.

It has at its disposal rail access without loading gauge limits and can connect up with the national road network directly via the B8 arterial road. There is no evidence of bridge height restrictions.

Technical information:

  • Width: 15 metres
  • Incline: 8°
  • Maximum load: 25 kN/m²

A rail loading bay for so-called road to rail transport is available at Passau-Schalding. With the aid of this facility road going vehicles can be driven directly from the road onto the railway wagons without the deployment of crane systems.

Scheduled ro-ro service:

Donau Star EOOD's fortnightly scheduled StarLines service has linked bayernhafen Passau to the Bulgarian port of Ruse an other ro-ro-ready ports on the Danube since July 2015. The two catamarans, Jumbo II and Jumbo III, are capable of transporting up to 1.500 t. They need around seven days to travel down the Danube to Ruse and nine days for the return trip to Passau.
